Therapeutic touch:
Therapeutic Touch was developed in the early 70’s by Delores
Krieger, PhD, nurse and professor at the University of New York.
Therapeutic Touch is an ancient practice of the imposition of the
hands but without religious implications. It is probably the most
studied and documented scientifically. The multiple studies clearly
demonstrate its effectiveness to reduce anxiety, tension and pain.
Therapeutic Touch accelerates the healing of fractures, wounds,
reduces the undesirable post operative effects and those of
chemotherapy.
This method is approved by numerous nursing associations around the
world, such as the Ordre des infirmières
et infirmiers du Québec. This therapy is
practiced in a number of hospitals and taught in more that 100
universities and colleges in 75 countries around the world. In spite
of its name Therapeutic Touch, it does not generally imply direct
touching of the hands. The therapist often has their hands a good 10
centimetres above the body. The body is usually covered with a sheet
and or the patient wears light coloured clothing.
A
Therapeutic Touch session lasts approximately 1 hour. The therapist
will center him or herself interiorly and with the help of the hands
evaluate the patients’ energy field before and after a treatment.
The therapist uses a sweeping motion over the complete body to
eliminate any energetic congestion. They harmonize the energy field
and energy centers, called chakras, by projecting thoughts, sounds
or colors. The Therapeutic Touch therapist explains that the body,
spirit and emotions are all part of the whole, one that remains
dynamic and complex to each individual. When the energetic fields
are in harmony, there is health; when the field is disrupted there
is sickness. There are no restrictions or medical recommendations
needed in order to receive a session in Therapeutic Touch.
