Deforestation:

I don’t want to encroach on the excellent work that Mr. Desjardins did on deforestation, but this is probably the next logical step.

The deforestation, created by forestry companies, has contributed to the drying of the land, the premature erosion and the increase in water temperature, as the forest has its own efficient barometer, maintaining constant water temperatures. Deposits and sediments are due to erosion caused by deforestation, even though they leave a small strip of trees around a lake or a river, it still contributes to the destruction of the different ecosystems.

Without the trees, water heats up quickly and this water is discharged to regions where there are forests. Fish and aquatic animals are threatened by deforestation. Trout have a hard time living in warm water. Warm water encourages the production of aquatic plants and algae, which contributes to the decrease of oxygen in the water and little by little, lakes die. Erosion always begins where there is deforestation. Small streams drain into larger streams and so on until it reaches the lakes. This affects the food chain from the smallest to the largest predator because the temperature and the waters PH are affected. Deforestation hardly supports animal and plant species like they claim.

Short or long term, many animal species are disappearing because of the lack of food and shelter. Wolves and moose are some examples. The moose has disappeared because vegetation was reduced and the wolves rely on the moose for their food, so they end up leaving the territory and migrate elsewhere.  Problem is that the wolves and moose head further north because of the lack of forests. Soon they will end up on the polar ice floor.  The last time I heard a wolf howling was in 1997 and in 2003 saw the last paw print.

The excessive cutting of the forests doesn’t only dry the soil but also the underground water source. With global warming, the drought and lack of rain, which will happen more frequently in the years to come, will be the cause of more forest fires. This will increase the already the enormous forest fire fighting cost. The location that is predicted to warm the fastest is Quebec.

We have to cease cutting the forests immediately. It is said that the Amazon forest is the breath of the world; I believe the forests of Quebec are as well. If our forests were not overly exploited, I believe there would be less smog in our cities during summer. With the coming of internet, there is no longer any reason to cut down the trees just to read a newspaper.
